2008 Ford Escape
Oil check, SAE 5W-20, and with-filter capacity for the 2008 Ford Escape 2.3L and 3.0L. The cited owner's guide does not print a drain torque.
Difficulty, time, and cost are estimates when this guide gives them. Torque is a cited figure, or it is left off.
Main source: 2008 Escape (204) Owner's Guide, USA, Maintenance and Specifications (opens in a new tab), Ford Motor Company, published 2008-01-01, read 2026-10-15.
Numbers on this page come from the cited source. Match the engine before you use a capacity or a torque. Do not work under a vehicle held only by a jack.
Funnel
The owner's guide says to remove the filler cap and pour the recommended oil through a funnel.
Clean rag
Used to wipe the dipstick before the second reading.
| Item | Figure | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| 2.3L engine oil, with filter | 4.5 quarts (4.25 L) | Owner's guide capacities table |
| 3.0L engine oil, with filter | 6.0 quarts (5.7 L) | Owner's guide capacities table |
| Viscosity and spec, both engines | SAE 5W-20 meeting WSS-M2C930-A with the API certification mark | Owner's guide oil recommendations |
| Oil filter, 2.3L I4 | Motorcraft FL-910 | Owner's guide Motorcraft part numbers |
| Oil filter, 3.0L DOHC V6 | Motorcraft FL-820-S | Owner's guide Motorcraft part numbers |
The owner's guide says to check the oil with the vehicle on level ground, the engine off, and a few minutes allowed for oil to drain back to the pan. Set the parking brake and confirm Park or 1 (First). Open the hood, pull the dipstick, wipe it, seat it fully, and pull it again.
If the level is between the MIN and MAX marks, or between the lower and upper holes, the guide says not to add oil. If it is below the MIN mark or the lower hole, add SAE 5W-20 that meets WSS-M2C930-A and shows the API certification mark. The 2.3L capacity with a filter is 4.5 quarts (4.25 L). The 3.0L capacity with a filter is 6.0 quarts (5.7 L). Those are fill quantities, not a target to pour in on top of oil that is already in the engine.
Recheck the dipstick and keep the level off the MAX mark or the upper hole. Seat the dipstick. Turn the filler cap clockwise a quarter turn until it is seated. The guide says not to use supplemental oil additives.
When the oil and filter are changed on the schedule in the guide, the Motorcraft number is FL-910 on the 2.3L and FL-820-S on the 3.0L. The guide says a filter that does not meet Ford's specification can cause start-up noise. It does not describe how to reach the filter or what to torque the drain plug to, so those steps are not added here.
The owner's guide identifies an oil filler cap and a dipstick in the engine-compartment legend for both the 2.3L and the 3.0L. That legend is a numbered list, not a measured layout, so this page does not draw the bay. The same guide tells you to change the oil and filter on the maintenance schedule and to use Motorcraft or an equivalent filter. It never states a drain-plug torque. A shop chart that floats around online was not used, because the copy read for this sheet does not print the unit next to the Escape rows.
