Oil pan gasket on a 2008 Ford Escape, 2.3L or 3.0L. Cited 3.0L torques only. The 2.3L pan torque was not in the sources read.
At a glance
Difficulty, time, and cost are estimates when this guide gives them. Torque is a cited figure, or it is left off.
- Difficulty
- Estimate only. On the 3.0L the cited path takes the exhaust Y-pipe off on a hoist. The 2.3L gas procedure was not the one read, so its difficulty is not rated here.
- Time
- Estimate only. Plan a full afternoon for the 3.0L path that removes the Y-pipe, the pan, and the filter. No labor time was printed for the 2.3L.
- Cost
- Estimate only. A gasket, oil, and a filter are the usual parts. This is not a shop quote and not a part price.
- Tools
- Hoist, Torque wrench, Plastic scraper, Funnel
- Key torque
- 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) — 3.0L oil pan-to-engine bolts
Numbers on this page come from the cited source. Match the engine before you use a capacity or a torque. Do not work under a vehicle held only by a jack.
Notes
The oil and filter figures are the same ones on the 2008 Escape oil and filter guide. That page is the owner's guide. This page does not add a second capacity.
The 3.0L torques were read from a published copy of the Escape II 2007-2012 engine mechanical text for the 3.0L (4V), schemes for in-vehicle oil pan removal and installation. That copy is not the Ford workshop DVD. Confirm the figures in Ford service information before you treat them as the only copy that matters. The numbered bolt figure is in that procedure and is not redrawn, because the text never lists the order.
A 1A Auto video titled for 2008-12 Escapes states that the car in the video is a 2012. The 2008 four-cylinder is a 2.3L. The 2009-2012 four-cylinder is a 2.5L. The video's pan-bolt and side-bolt figures line up with the 3.0L text, and the narrator does not name the engine. Use it as a look at exhaust clearance, the rubber shield, and the pickup as the pan comes down. Do not use his "around the pan" wording as the Ford sequence, and do not move his figures onto the 2.3L.
If the oil pan baffle is removed, the same 3.0L page tightens four M6 nuts in two stages, 5 Nm (44 lb-in) then an additional 45 degrees, then four M8 nuts in two stages, 15 Nm (133 lb-in) then an additional 45 degrees. The removal order is "the following sequence" and is not printed. Leave the baffle alone unless you are in that procedure.
Spark plug gap and firing sequence for these two engines are on the 2008 Escape spark plug guide. They are not part of the pan job.
