2008 Ford Escape drive belt. The owner's guide prints a routing figure for the 2.3L and the 3.0L and does not describe the path in text.
At a glance
Difficulty, time, and cost are estimates when this guide gives them. Torque is a cited figure, or it is left off.
Difficulty
Estimate only. Changing a belt is ordinary on many cars. This guide does not rate the 2008 Escape, because the routing steps and the tensioner were not printed in text.
Time
Estimate only. No labor time is printed.
Cost
Estimate only. A belt is the usual part. No belt part number was printed in the engine-data table that was read. This is not a price.
Tools
The owner's guide figure for that engine, Belt tool, only if the Ford procedure names one
Numbers on this page come from the cited source. Match the engine before you use a capacity or a torque. Do not work under a vehicle held only by a jack.
Safety
The engine must be off, the key out, and the belt cool. A running belt will take a finger with it.
Do not install a belt from a drawing this page does not have. Use the figure in the owner's guide for the engine on the car.
The 2.3L figure and the 3.0L figure are different titles. A belt routed for the wrong engine will not run the accessories.
No tensioner torque is cited. Do not borrow one from another Ford.
Symptoms
A squeal from the front of the engine that changes with engine speed, or a belt that looks cracked, glazed, or frayed when the engine is off and cool.
Those are reasons to inspect the belt. They are not a measurement, and the owner's guide does not print a wear limit.
Diagnosis
Confirm the engine first. The engine-data table titles two figures: 2.3L I4 engine with A/C, without A/C similar, and 3.0L V6 engine.
The path is the figure. The text does not say which pulley is the tensioner or which way the belt runs.
A 2020 Escape belt note is a different engine family. Do not use it to route this 2008 belt.
If the belt has jumped off, the figure in the owner's guide is the check. This page does not redraw it, because a wrong drawing strands the car.
Tools
The owner's guide figure for that engine
Open the drivebelt routing figure for the 2.3L or the 3.0L. This page does not replace that drawing.
Belt tool, only if the Ford procedure names one
No tensioner tool, socket size, or spring direction was printed in the text that was read. Do not guess the direction the tensioner moves.

Tensioner torque and belt part number
Not printed in the text that was read.
This page. Ford service information, or the figure in the owner's guide, is the routing source.
Steps
01Identify the engine and open its figure
The engine-data page names the figure. It does not narrate the path.
2.3L I4: the figure is titled 2.3L I4 engine with A/C, and the line says without A/C is similar.
3.0L V6: the figure is titled 3.0L V6 engine.
Photograph the old belt, or sketch it, before it comes off, and still check that sketch against the owner's guide figure.
02Do not invent the tensioner direction
The text that was read never says which pulley is the tensioner or which way to rotate it.
Get that from the Ford service procedure or from the figure if the figure labels the tensioner.
A wrench on the wrong bolt can unload the spring in your face. Stop if the pulley you are turning is not labeled.
03Replace the belt only along the printed figure
Seat the belt in every groove the figure shows. A rib that is one groove off will shred.
There is no part number in the engine-data table that was read. Match the belt to the 2008 Escape and to the engine, on the retailer page.
The 2020 Escape belt is not this belt.
04Look at it running, from a safe distance
After it is on, start the engine only when tools and hands are clear. Watch that the belt stays in the grooves. Shut it off if it walks off a pulley.
No tension spec was printed, so do not claim a deflection measurement.
A squeal that remains can be a seized pulley. That diagnosis is not a torque, and no pulley torque was read.
Notes
Spark plug gap and firing sequence for the same engine-data table are on the spark plug guide. Oil capacity is on the oil and filter guide. Neither of those pages describes the belt path.
The oil pan guide for the 3.0L removes the exhaust Y-pipe. That is not a belt step. Do not pull the Y-pipe to change the belt unless a belt procedure you are actually reading says to.
Common mistakes
Routing the 2.3L belt from the 3.0L figure, or the other way around.
Redrawing the path from memory or from a 2020 Escape page.
Adding a tensioner torque that was not in the source.
Working the belt with the engine running.
Parts and tools
Outbound links only. BaySheet does not sell parts. Confirm fitment on the retailer page. Amazon links are searches for the part name plus this vehicle. They are not a part number.
Part
Drive belt for the 2008 Escape engine you have
No Motorcraft belt number was printed in the engine-data table. The 2.3L and the 3.0L figures are different. Confirm the engine before you buy.
The owner's guide prints it as a figure and does not describe the path in text. A drawing that is even one pulley off is worse than a link to the figure. Open the 2008 Escape owner's guide engine-data page for the 2.3L or the 3.0L title.
What is the tensioner torque?
It was not printed in the text that was read. Ford service information is the place to get it. This page does not guess.
Is the without-A/C 2.3L a different picture?
The table says 2.3L I4 engine with A/C, without A/C similar. It does not print a second path in text. Use the figure, and do not assume similar means identical if the car has no A/C and the figure looks different from the engine.
