2019 Honda Civic
2019 Honda Civic sedan oil grade, change capacity, and drain-bolt torque, split by the 1.5 L and 2.0 L engines in the owner's manual.
Difficulty, time, and cost are estimates when this guide gives them. Torque is a cited figure, or it is left off.
Main source: 2019 Civic Sedan Owner's Manual, 19 CIVIC 4D, book date October 26, 2018 (opens in a new tab), American Honda Motor Co., Inc., published 2018-10-26, read 2026-10-15.
Numbers on this page come from the cited source. Match the engine before you use a capacity or a torque. Do not work under a vehicle held only by a jack.
Drain pan and oil-filter wrench
The procedure drains the oil and says a special filter wrench is sold by a dealer.
Funnel
Oil is poured in at the fill cap after the drain bolt is torqued.
| Item | Figure | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 L engine, oil | Genuine Honda Motor Oil 0W-20, or API premium-grade 0W-20. Change 3.4 US qt (3.2 L). Change including filter 3.7 US qt (3.5 L). | 1.5 L specifications table and the oil-change procedure |
| 2.0 L engine, oil | Genuine Honda Motor Oil 0W-20, or API premium-grade 0W-20. Change 4.2 US qt (4.0 L). Change including filter 4.4 US qt (4.2 L). | 2.0 L specifications table and the oil-change procedure |
Each figure stays with the source named in the last column. If a sequence is a figure in that source and the order is not printed in the text, this page does not invent the order.
| Fastener | Torque | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil drain bolt | 30 lbf-ft (40 N-m, 4.0 kgf-m) | Changing the engine oil and oil filter |
Run the engine to normal operating temperature and turn it off. Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap. Remove the Phillips-head screws and the slotted-head screws by turning them 90 degrees counterclockwise, and remove the under cover.
Remove the drain bolt and washer and drain the oil. Remove the oil filter. If the old gasket is stuck to the engine, detach it. Wipe the contact surface, coat the new filter gasket with new oil, and install the filter. The manual says to follow the instructions supplied with the filter and that a dealer sells the special wrench.
Put a new washer on the drain bolt. Tightening torque is 30 lbf-ft (40 N-m, 4.0 kgf-m). Pour the recommended oil. Including the filter, the 1.5 L engine takes 3.7 US qt (3.5 L) and the 2.0 L engine takes 4.4 US qt (4.2 L). The specifications table also lists a change amount without stating the filter: 3.4 US qt (3.2 L) on the 1.5 L and 4.2 US qt (4.0 L) on the 2.0 L.
Reinstall the fill cap and start the engine. The low oil pressure indicator should go off within five seconds. Run the engine a few minutes, confirm there is no leak at the drain bolt or filter, shut it off, wait three minutes, and read the dipstick. Add oil if needed.
The oil-change procedure pairs the including-filter capacities in words: 3.7 US qt (3.5 L) under 1.5 L engine models and 4.4 US qt (4.2 L) under 2.0 L engine models. The specifications chapter repeats those figures and adds the change amounts without the filter. No oil-filter torque is printed. This file is the sedan manual, book title 19 CIVIC 4D.
