2019 Honda Civic
2019 Honda Civic sedan coolant type and change capacity from the specifications tables, with the 1.5 L footnotes kept intact.
Difficulty, time, and cost are estimates when this guide gives them. Torque is a cited figure, or it is left off.
Main source: 2019 Civic Sedan Owner's Manual, engine coolant check and specifications (opens in a new tab), American Honda Motor Co., Inc., published 2018-10-26, read 2026-10-15.
Numbers on this page come from the cited source. Match the engine before you use a capacity or a torque. Do not work under a vehicle held only by a jack.
Specified coolant
Add Honda Type 2 only after the engine and radiator are cool. The level is read in the reserve tank.
| Item | Figure | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Specified coolant | Honda Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 in the maintenance chapter. The specifications tables say Honda Long-Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type2, 50/50 with distilled water. Premixed 50 percent antifreeze and 50 percent water. Do not add straight antifreeze or water. | Engine coolant section and both engine specification tables |
| 2.0 L change capacity | 1.4 US gal (5.32 L), change including the remaining 0.2 US gal (0.75 L) in the reserve tank. | 2.0 L engine specifications, engine coolant |
| 1.5 L, CVT, no detachable tow hook | 1.34 US gal (5.09 L), change including the remaining 0.2 US gal (0.75 L) in the reserve tank. Footnotes *1 and *3. | 1.5 L engine specifications, engine coolant |
| 1.5 L, manual, no detachable tow hook | 1.32 US gal (5.01 L), change including the remaining 0.2 US gal (0.75 L) in the reserve tank. Footnotes *2 and *3. | 1.5 L engine specifications, engine coolant |
| 1.5 L, with detachable tow hook | 1.30 US gal (4.92 L), change including the remaining 0.15 US gal (0.58 L) in the reserve tank. Footnote *4 does not split CVT and manual. | 1.5 L engine specifications, engine coolant |
Check the reserve tank every time you refuel. The engine and radiator must be cool. If the level is below MIN, add the specified coolant until it reaches MAX. Inspect the cooling system for leaks.
The 2.0 L table lists one change capacity, 1.4 US gal (5.32 L), including the 0.2 US gal left in the reserve tank. The 1.5 L table lists three change capacities. Match the footnotes: CVT without a detachable towing hook, manual without that hook, or a model with a detachable towing hook.
Those figures are change capacities, including coolant left in the reserve tank. A low reserve tank is filled to the MAX mark, not filled with the whole gallon figure.
The 1.5 L coolant footnotes on the same specifications page are: *1 continuously variable transmission models, *2 manual transmission models, *3 models without a detachable towing hook, and *4 models with a detachable towing hook. The *4 capacity is not split by transmission. Genuine Honda coolant is described as a 50/50 mix that can withstand freezing to about -31 F (-35 C).
