2021 Honda Civic
2021 Honda Civic sedan oil grade, capacities, and drain-bolt torque for the 1.5 L and 2.0 L engines. No coupe or hatch figures.
Difficulty, time, and cost are estimates when this guide gives them. Torque is a cited figure, or it is left off.
Main source: 2021 Civic Sedan Owner's Manual, oil change procedure and specifications (opens in a new tab), American Honda Motor Co., Inc., published 2020-08-25, read 2026-10-15.
Numbers on this page come from the cited source. Match the engine before you use a capacity or a torque. Do not work under a vehicle held only by a jack.
Special oil-filter wrench
The procedure says you need a special wrench to replace the filter and that a dealer can supply it.
| Item | Figure | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 L engine | Honda Genuine Motor Oil 0W-20, or API premium-grade 0W-20 detergent oil. Change 3.4 US qt (3.2 L). Change including filter 3.7 US qt (3.5 L). Displacement 91.38 cu-in (1,498 cm3). | 1.5 L specifications and the oil-change procedure |

Each figure stays with the source named in the last column. If a sequence is a figure in that source and the order is not printed in the text, this page does not invent the order.
| Fastener | Torque | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil drain bolt | 30 lbf-ft (40 N-m, 4.0 kgf-m) | Changing the engine oil and oil filter |
Run the engine to normal temperature, shut it off, open the hood, and remove the fill cap. Remove the under-cover screws by turning them 90 degrees counterclockwise. Remove the drain bolt and washer and drain the oil.
Remove the filter with the special wrench. Make sure the old gasket is not stuck to the block. Lightly coat the new gasket with new oil and install the filter using the filter's own instructions. Put a new washer on the drain bolt. Tightening torque is 30 lbf-ft (40 N-m, 4.0 kgf-m). The procedure prints that torque once for the shared steps, with both engines illustrated.
The procedure lists 3.7 US qt (3.5 L) including the filter for the 1.5 L and 4.4 US qt (4.2 L) including the filter for the 2.0 L. The specifications table also lists change amounts without the filter of 3.4 US qt (3.2 L) and 4.2 US qt (4.0 L).
Install the fill cap, start the engine, check for leaks, shut it off, wait three minutes, and read the dipstick. Add oil if needed. Reinstall the under cover.
The 2.0 L and 1.5 L fill caps and drain bolts are drawn separately, but the torque line and the including-filter quantities sit in the shared procedure. No filter torque is printed.
