The climate-control section places the cabin air filter behind the glove box. It lists comfort, cleanliness, and protection of the climate-control components.
The same section says that for additional information, or to replace the filter, see an authorized dealer. It does not describe a tab, a damper, or which way the element slides.
The Motorcraft tables list FP-79 for the 2.7L EcoBoost, the 3.0L diesel, the 3.3L, the 3.5L EcoBoost, and the 5.0L. The normal maintenance table says to replace the cabin air filter every 20,000 mi (32,000 km).
The filter has to stay installed. The manual says running the climate system without it can degrade or damage the system. This page does not add a hinge or a slide direction the book does not print.
