Batteries produce explosive gas. Keep flames and sparks away, shield your face, and ventilate.
Lift a plastic-cased battery with a battery carrier or by opposite corners. Pressure on the end walls can push acid through the vent caps.
Sulfuric acid. Flush skin or eyes with water for at least 15 minutes and get medical attention. If swallowed, call a physician immediately.
The truck may have more than one battery. Disconnect the cables from all batteries.
Do not ground an accessory to the negative post. The battery management system can read the condition wrong.
This printing does not print the 2024 negative-then-positive removal sequence or the two-minute wait. Do not copy those steps onto this truck.
Symptoms
Poor idle after a battery disconnect is the relearn the manual describes, until the engine has idled and been driven.
On E85, a flex-fuel truck can start poorly until the ethanol content is relearned.
Diagnosis
The gasoline tables list two part numbers and do not say which cab or trim gets which. Do not invent a standard and an optional label from the 2024 book.
The diesel number is BAGM-49H8-850. It is not one of the gasoline numbers.
Tools
Battery carrier
The lifting warning says to lift a plastic-cased battery with a battery carrier or with your hands on opposite corners.
Wire brush
If you see corrosion, remove the cables and clean the terminals with a wire brush. Baking soda and water can neutralize the acid.

Gasoline engines
The 2.7L, 3.3L, 3.5L, and 5.0L tables each list BAGM-48H6-760 and BAGM-94RH7-800. They do not label one standard and the other optional.

Steps
01Read both gasoline numbers
Each gasoline parts table lists BAGM-48H6-760 and BAGM-94RH7-800 on the battery rows, without a standard or optional label. The diesel table lists BAGM-49H8-850 only. The truck uses a Motorcraft maintenance-free battery that normally does not need added water. A replacement must match the electrical requirements of the vehicle. Reinstall the cover or shield after cleaning or replacement.
02Relearn idle after a disconnect
Apply the parking brake, shift to Park or Neutral, and switch the accessories off. Press the brake and start the engine. Run it to normal temperature while you reset the clock, the window bounce-back, and the radio presets. Idle for at least one minute, then drive at least 10 mi (16 km) so the idle trim and fuel trim can relearn. If the engine is not allowed to relearn, idle quality can suffer until it does. A flex-fuel truck on E85 can start poorly until the ethanol content is relearned.
03Let the management system sleep
After replacement, or after some external charges, the battery management system needs eight hours fully locked with the ignition off. Some electrical systems can stay disabled until then. If the truck will sit more than 30 days without a charge, the manual recommends disconnecting the negative cable. Recycle the old battery through the local authority.
Notes
Systems the battery management system can temporarily disable include the heated rear window, heated seats, climate control, heated steering wheel, audio unit, and navigation. A message about that action is a notification, not by itself proof that the battery has failed. Keep the top of the battery clean and dry.
Common mistakes
Copying the 2024 removal order, which disconnects the negative cable first after a two-minute wait. This printing does not print that sequence.
Labeling BAGM-94RH7-800 as King Ranch, Lariat, and Premium. That note is in the 2018 book, not in these 2019 rows.

Part
Motorcraft BAGM-48H6-760
Printed on the battery row of the 2.7L, 3.3L, 3.5L, and 5.0L tables, next to BAGM-94RH7-800. This printing does not label either number standard or optional.
The gasoline tables list both BAGM-48H6-760 and BAGM-94RH7-800 and do not label them standard or optional. The 3.0L diesel table lists BAGM-49H8-850. A replacement has to match the electrical requirements of the vehicle.
What has to be reset after a disconnect?
The clock, the window bounce-back, and the radio presets, while the engine warms up. Then idle at least one minute and drive at least 10 mi (16 km) so idle trim and fuel trim can relearn.
