Batteries produce explosive gas. Keep flame and sparks away, shield your face, and ventilate.
Battery posts and related parts contain lead. Wash your hands after handling them.
Do not connect an accessory ground to the negative post. The book says that can make the battery-management reading wrong.
Reinstall the cover or shield if the battery has one.
Replacement is a Ford battery that matches the vehicle. The book sends access, testing, and replacement to a dealer.
Symptoms
The cluster says Low Battery or Key Battery Low. The key-fob battery is a different part and is not one of these Motorcraft numbers.
Corrosion on the case or the terminals.
Diagnosis
Match the Motorcraft number to the engine table and to the Intelligent Access or Auto-Start-Stop footnote when the table prints one.
The 2.7L number is not a BXT-90 series battery.
After a disconnect, the book prints a relearn: Park, brake, start, reset the clock, windows, and radio, idle, shift to Neutral while holding the brake, hold a higher idle for at least a minute, then drive at least 12 miles (20 km).
Tools
Wire brush
If you see corrosion, the book says to remove the cables and clean them with a wire brush. It also names a baking-soda-and-water mix for acid.
Battery carrier
The warning says to lift a plastic-cased battery with a battery carrier or with your hands on opposite corners, not by squeezing the end walls.

Service
Motorcraft maintenance-free battery. The book says it normally does not need water. Low-voltage testing, access, and replacement go to a dealer.
Changing the 12V battery
Steps
01Read the battery row for that engine
Use the Motorcraft table for the engine, including the Intelligent Access and Auto-Start-Stop footnotes. Do not move the 2.7L number onto another engine.
02Clean corrosion only as the book describes
Keep the top clean and dry and the cables tight. If the terminals are corroded, remove the cables, brush them, and neutralize acid with baking soda and water. Put the cover back on.
03Have a dealer replace it, then relearn idle
The book sends replacement to a dealer and a Ford battery that matches the electrical requirements. If the cables were disconnected, follow the printed relearn, including a drive of at least 12 miles.
Notes
The cluster message Key Battery Low Replace is the remote key, not the under-hood battery. This printing does not give a key-battery part number on the Motorcraft tables, so none is added.
Dispose of the old battery through a local recycling authority. The book says to ask that authority where to take it.
Common mistakes
Installing the 2.0L battery on a 2.7L.
Grounding a charger or an accessory on the negative post.
Treating the key-fob low-battery message as the under-hood battery.

Outbound links only. BaySheet does not sell parts. Confirm fitment on the retailer page. Amazon links are searches for a real part name plus this vehicle. Tool rows do not get a product search. The search is not a part number.
Part
Motorcraft BXT-90T5-590 battery
Listed for the 1.5L Auto-Start-Stop row, the 2.0L, and the 2.5L. Confirm the engine and the equipment footnotes before you buy.
Printed on the 1.5L table without an Intelligent Access or Auto-Start-Stop footnote. This page does not assign it to a feature the table does not name.
It depends on the engine. 2.0L is BXT-90T5-590. 2.7L is BXT-94RH7-730. The 1.5L and 2.5L tables list more than one number and footnote Intelligent Access or Auto-Start-Stop. The book says to have a dealer replace it.
Does it take water?
The book calls it a Motorcraft maintenance-free battery that normally does not require additional water.
What happens after the cables are disconnected?
Idle and fuel trim, the clock, and radio presets can be lost. The battery chapter prints a relearn drive of at least 12 miles.
