CVT fluid drain and fill

Safety

• Use Genuine NISSAN CVT Fluid NS-3 or equivalent only. Do not mix it with other fluids.
• Do not use automatic transmission fluid or manual transmission fluid in the CVT.
• When checking or replacement is required, we recommend a NISSAN dealer for servicing. That sentence is printed at the CVT fluid heading and does not itself repeat the words CVT fluid.
• No drain-plug size, drain-plug torque, fluid temperature, or refill quantity is printed. This page does not add them.
• The CVT section does not name a drain plug, a socket, or a fill procedure.

Symptoms

• The maintenance text says to inspect transmission fluid for leakage at the specified intervals. A wet case is a leak inspection, not a fill quantity.
• This book does not print a shudder, a slip, or a warning light as the reason to drain the CVT.

Diagnosis

1. Use this year's book. The dealer sentence and the 60,000-mile wording are not identical in every Rogue manual.
2. The capacity row for CVT fluid prints dashes in the metric, US, and Imperial cells.
3. Repeated short trips are a separate severe-driving bullet. They are not the condition on the 60,000-mile CVT sentence.

Specifications

Steps

1. 01Name the fluid and stop at the dashes

The capacity table specifies Genuine NISSAN CVT Fluid NS-3 or equivalent and prints dashes for the quantity. Using a fluid that is not equivalent may damage the CVT, and that damage is not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

2. 02Read the 60,000-mile line as the condition it prints

That 60,000-mile sentence is the severe-use paragraph. It is not the normal schedule, and it is not the short-trip bullet. The deterioration figure in this printing uses a comma: 210,000.

   1. Do not move that interval onto repeated short trips. Short trips are a different bullet in the severe-driving list.
   2. The normal schedule is not a CVT drain interval.

3. 03Have a dealer do the check or replacement

When checking or replacement is required, we recommend a NISSAN dealer for servicing. That sentence is printed at the CVT fluid heading and does not itself repeat the words CVT fluid. The book does not print the drain, the level check, or a fill quantity.

4. 04Do not add a pan filter the book does not name

This owner's manual does not name a CVT pan, a pan gasket, a strainer, or a pan filter. Those parts stay off this page.

Common mistakes

• Filling with automatic transmission fluid or mixing NS-3 with another fluid.
• Treating 60,000 miles as the interval for short trips.
• Buying a pan filter or strainer this owner's manual does not name.
• Inventing a drain-plug torque or a refill quantity because the capacity cells are dashes.
• Using an engine-oil drain torque from the oil-change steps printed just before the CVT heading. Those steps are engine oil. This CVT section does not print a drain torque.
